Hong Kong – Healthy and Holistic

It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver. – Mahatma Gandhi

Over the past few years (especially the last two years) I have moved way from the party and drinking culture of Hong Kong to the side of holistic, health and fitness. Though Hong Kong its self is not the healthiest of environments to live in, with high levels of pollution, junk in our oceans and sometime questionable drinking water. Some of us don’t have a choice and we look at ways we can make the best of the situation. When we are lucky to have a few glorious days of blue skies, clear oceans which are free of rubbish (dead fish?). There are many wonderful people and clubs who can help support you on your own healthy journey. I thought it would be a great opportunity to share with you people and clubs who have made my little Healthy and Holistic journey in Hong Kong such a supportive and rewarding one. So i’ll share my loves and hopefully they will bring some joy to you too.

Helen Griffiths (Kinesiologist)

I can not speak more highly of Helen. Over the past year, I have worked regularly with her and during this time she supported and guided me through a very challenging and difficult time. I dealt with past traumas from my childhood and the root causes of my poor self esteem, low self worth, fear of abandonment and fear of dying tragically. Throughout all of my sessions she gently supported me and we formed a close bond where I was able to trust her, she always treated me honestly and with love. Through her guidance, support, openness and affirmative language she supported me as I changed my life. She is one talented lady and so are all the wonderful staff at Kinesiology Asia, if you are curious about Kienspoilgy book an appointment, you wont be disappointed!

Lindsay Hunter (Physiotherapist)

Lindsay is one talented, supportive and patient physio (and friend). I first saw Lindsay (well over three years ago). She helped rebuild my body, when I injured myself (yes well a  slip beside a pool in Boracay and I broke my rib). Countless physios before her said I would never paddle again. I was heart broken, but she never once squashed my dreams, instead we set up a rehabilitation program and sessions to rebuild my body from broken and damage to strong and balanced. Lindsay is one of the best physios in Hong Kong and without her guidance I wouldn’t have been able to flip tyres, paddle the oceans in Hong Kong and Hawaii or twist around in yoga. She has amazing helping hands.

Dr Grace Yu (Acupuncturist/Traditional Chinese Medicine)

Dr Grace is a quirky, fun, caring  and gentle (needles are used!!) practitioner who has taught me to treat my body in different way especially with warmth and care. By doing this I was able to understand what was happening with my health, my energy levels and how food can help heal my body. I was intrigued to learn more about my qi,  balancing my yin and yang energy levels, meridian systems and yes the ever so delicious Chinese medicine well it didn’t always taste fabulous but it sure did work. I was amazed just how well! Sessions would run from half an hour to an hour depending on what work was needed. I highly recommend Dr Grace and all the practitioners at Balance Health  they are such a great group of people!

The best thing Dr Grace introduced me to was PhytaSwiss STRESS COMPLEX 05. It helps ease anxiety and increase confidence during stressful periods. It’s an all-natural relaxant and stress reliever and believe me it works! All teachers need this in the drawer at work or backpack.

Graeme Bradshaw (Naturopath, Homeopath and Founding Director) – IMI

Graeme is a wonderfully, patient, caring and knowledgable practitioner and he is based in Central and Discovery Bay. He really sorted ‘my gut’ out and he was the first person who planted the seed, that maybe teaching wasn’t the right career for me as well as Hong Kong. We combated the symptoms of what chronic stress had done to me, the impact on my poor body and how this had affected my health. I have had many friends, colleges and students also see Graeme, for allergies (Hong Kong , intolerances and general aches and pains.

The best thing three things he introduced to me was my daily UltraBiotic 45 a probiotic (taken at night time). This probiotic is ‘alive’ and is a multistrain probiotic with 45 Billion CFU per capsule. It assists in the restoration of a healthy intestinal flora while maintaining a healthy digestive function. I have been taking these for over 18 months and they have worked well to build up my immunity.  I used the Ohhira’s Probiotics OM-X Paste when I was really not well (I also take these when I travel) this product has helped me immensely. But the last product which I swear by is my  Echinacea Goldenseal Propolis Spray which is a god send and to all teachers, anyone who travels, talks a lot or is susceptible to sore throats (basically anyone in Hong Kong) this Echinacea Goldenseal Propolis Spray is amazing. I have passed this on to many friends as gifts . The trick is to use just as you are starting to get a sore throat, it helps promote a healthy immune system in your throat and the best thing is it works! In Central, they have an amazing dispensary which is stocked with vitamins, tea, books and much more. If you’re not feeling 100% or just curious to know more, check out their website, there are many great practitioners there to help you.

Anahata Yoga

Last year, I completed my first Hatha yoga teaching training with Yogananth Andiappan, Yogesh, Vishnu, Mahesh and the team at Anahata. I was so impressed by their knowledge of yoga,  skill set and passion for yoga. What I truly love about Anahata is that they guinesally care about you, they know your name (including the office staff Tiffany, Alex and Erica), they always greet you with a smile, they make you feel worthy, they laugh with you and they make you feel apart of a little yoga family. I have loved the authenticity of the yoga taught at Anahata and how it rooted its Indian roots to be as authentic as yoga can be in Hong Kong. I will truly miss everyone at Anahata – Namaste.

Urusus Fitness

My little strongman family! I first started out with Ursus Fitness when we were playing outside in the Cyberport heat flipping tyres, grazing knees, creating sparks with generators breaking down. 12 months later, Bam and Gary they have one of the hottest gyms in Hong Kong based in Sai Ying Pun. Ursus Fitness is the only Strongman gym in Hong Kong and it offers Bear Camp, Ursus FIT, Boot camp as well as boxing with Pele. What I love about Ursus Fitness is they actually care about you, they help you achieve your goals, they physically push, support and encourage you every step of your fitness journey. I most certainly would never have flipped a 220kg tyre without them. Thank you to everyone involved at Ursus Fitness especially Bam and Gary- You’re fabulous! Go check them out – They are the best!

Lamma Dragons

My wonderful dragon baoting years were spent with the Lamma Dragon on Lamma Island, they are the best Dragonboat Club in Hong Kong. Even better if you live on Lamma you don’t have an excuse not to paddle however there is a small number of members who commute each weekend from Central to Lamma to paddle, I was one of them. Watching the club grow from strength to strength was a privilege and it was exciting to see them at the forefront of developing the Under 18s Youth division. Heeeeeeeey Baby!!! Want to find out more? Head to Island Bar and ask for Brad!

They are one of the best Outrigging Clubs in Hong Kong with a wonderful collection of people from all over the world who come together for their love of paddling. Once a month with the helping hands of Mark and Jen Pollard they run the ever so popular VRC Races Series, where individuals (OC and Surf Ski) and Hong Kong OC teams battle it out around different parts of Hong Kong. There are so many great events for outrigging and dragon boating held amongst the different paddle clubs through out the year. Get in touch and get on the water!

Locofama

One of my favourite Hong Kong eats is in my little hood and just tucked away off Third Street is Locofama. It dishes out some beautiful organic treats and meals, serves great coffee and pots of tea. In the evening you can sit out side and relax with a pot of tea or a glass of wine. Perfect combination. Check them out!
